Course Site: lab404.com/255

This course traces the history of graphic design, from its origins in bookmaking to contemporary new media. The main focus will be on the period beginning with the Arts & Crafts movement of the late 19th Century and continuing through the modern and "post-modern" design movements of the 20th Century. There are no prerequisites for this class.

In this course you will:
  • Understand how design, culture, and technology affect each other
  • Gain insight into the historical continuity of visual communication
  • Develop a foundation for the pursuit of design research
  • Design projects in two different historical styles
  • Write a research paper on the (approved) design topic of your choice
  • Write a critical response to a well-known designer's work
  • Write several shorter responses to ongoing reading assignments
  • Dialogue in class and online about topics related to the assigned readings

Note: The total passing score on assignments does not guarantee a passing grade for the course. Your adherence to the attendance policy, along with your participation in class critiques, presentations, and in-class exercises significantly impacts your final grade. Grades can be dropped if assignments are late. Missing more than 2 classes in the semester will result in lowering your final grade. Please read both the attendance and grading policy carefully.
