MMAS 410 / Spring 2004
[digital] texturing & lighting

Instructor: Curt Cloninger / curt at lab404 dot com / (office) 251-6553 / Zeiss 211

Course Site: http://www.lab404.com/410/

MMAS 410 focuses on the visual aesthetics of 3D lighting, texturing, painting, and rendering, with a particular emphasis on the more artistic, experimental applications of the genre. The course seeks to supplement students' existing 3D modeling and animation skillsets with a deeper knowledge of the "last mile" of 3D art -- texturing, lighting, and rendering.

Additionally, students will become familiar with 2D painting and photographic concepts as applied to 3D software. Research, quizzes, and class discussion will supplement the major project development process.

The project phases and other assignments required in this class are time-intensive and require an average of 9 hours per week on the computer, either in a campus lab or on your own computer that contains the software used in the class. The pre-requisite for this class is MMAS 310.

In this course you will:
  • Design and develop a hi-res 3D scene in an intentional, consistent aesthetic style
  • Increase visual awareness of and appreciation for the subtleties of real world and digital textures and lighting
  • Demonstrate creative solutions to standard 3D texturing and lighting challenges
  • Create a "morgue" of personal real-world textures
  • Synthesise multiple procedures to achieve non-standard visual solutions
  • Accentuate drama and narrative via staging and lighting
  • Understand the role of a texturer/lighter/renderer within the confines of various projects
  • Understand the role of a texturer/lighter/renderer within the context of various production teams
  • Develop and defend personal design decisions based on knowledge of the project's overall goals

Assignments will explore the following subjects:
  • Recognizing subtle details in digital and real world materials
  • Creating "dirty" surfaces using digital tools
  • Lighting for Plot and Character development
  • Texturing for narrative effect
  • Rendering and Compositing based on project needs/limitations

Note: The total passing score on assignments does not guarantee a passing grade for the course. Your evaluation in the area of professionalism on the student evaluation form, and your adherence to the attendance policy, along with your participation in class critiques, presentations, and in-class exercises, significantly impact your final grade. Grades can be dropped if assignments are late. Missing more than 1 class in the semester will result in lowering your final grade. Please read both the attendance and grading policy carefully -- they are attached and are considered part of the syllabus.
